Maine has a history of sea captains who sailed to exotic ports around the world. Using a variety of ethnic fabrics, I created different doorways to signify the many ports the ships sailed to. Of course, the women and children were waiting at home, often keeping watch on the “widow’s walk” in their homes; hence, the tall houses at the top. The names of the countries the sea captains visited are quilted into the border.
